To emphasize the importance of dates this season, we had the privilege to speak with Dr.Dana McNeil, certified Gottman therapist and founder of the San Diego Relationship Place.

Dr.McNeil was drawn to practice couples therapy because she was fascinated by the way couples handle conflict in their relationships. Conflict is inevitable and she wanted to provide couples with the tactics to create a healthy relationship environment. The core of her practice is the Gottman Method, an evidence-based type of therapy.

In her practice, she has seen the benefits of reassuring romantic dates in couples. She explained that dates are positive events that release hormones of happiness, such as serotonin, creating a bond. The level of extravagance doesn’t play a role in the benefits of dates. Ultimately the date will be most advantageous if you are utilizing your time in a way that connects you to your partner. By practicing this, partners will feel valued and seen.
To follow the Gottman Method, a couple should have a designated time for a date once a week.
